At the University of Tartu, artificial intelligence (AI) is both a practical tool and an object of research.

In teaching and studies, AI can support the development of learners’ future skills, incl. competence in using AI, and assist both learning and teaching. At the same time, it is important to ensure that the use of AI does not hinder the development of critical thinking. In research, AI is used on the one hand to enhance the efficiency of research processes and, on the other hand, as a subject of study in its own right. Both activities contribute to increasing the university’s international competitiveness. In support services, AI helps to improve the quality, efficiency and accessibility of services.

The University of Tartu’s AI steering group has formulated objectives and principles for the use of AI, which together form the framework for its use at the university. These cover both the university’s core activities and related services, as well as support functions
