For researchers

When using AI in research, general principles of research integrity and, where necessary, discipline-specific codes of ethics must be followed. The emergence of AI has not altered the fundamental values agreed upon in the code of conduct for research integrity, incl. honesty, openness and responsibility – these must continue to receive careful attention in the new context.

AI can be used for

• finding, filtering and synthesising information,
• processing large volumes of data,
• ideation,
• drafting and formatting texts.

While the use of AI can help researchers save time, it does not replace critical thinking. Final responsibility for the correct interpretation of research results always remains with the researcher. As norms and best practices for AI use are still evolving, particular attention must be paid to ethical and professional considerations when implementing new solutions.

Regardless of the field of activity and the researcher’s role, the following apply:

• UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence,
• OECD AI Principles,
• European Commission’s guidelines on the responsible use of AI in research and development,
• European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),
• the university’s data protection policy.
