Using AI at the University of Tartu

When using AI in research, general principles of research integrity and, where necessary, discipline-specific codes of ethics must be followed. The emergence of AI has not altered the fundamental values agreed upon in the code of conduct for research integrity, incl. honesty, openness and responsibility – these must continue to receive careful attention in the new context.

Learning opportunities

The University of Tartu encourages the use of AI (incl. AI chatbots) in studies, but it must be purposeful, ethical, critical and transparent.

Researchers from the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Tartu have developed an artificial intelligence-based machine learning model that enabled the relapse risk of endometrial cancer to be assessed before surgical intervention.

Researchers at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science, Junior Research Fellow of Artificial Intelligence Joonas Ariva and Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence Dmytro Fishman, together with radiologists from Tartu University Hospital and engineers at Better Medicine, have developed an AI-based tool that accelerates the detection of kidney cancer. Its effectiveness was validated in a study published in Nature Communications Medicine.

Marina Lepp, Associate Professor of Informatics at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science, together with co-author Joosep Kaimre examined in a research article the impact of artificial intelligence tools on students’ academic outcomes. A total of 231 students took part in the study.
